INTRODUCTION

Breeding Trigona is a new phenomenon in Malaysia. Many of us assuming Trigona may not able to produce a large amount of honey. Hence, a new technology of breeding Trigona that initiated by MARDI is clearly possible to produce honey at 2kg/colony per month. Additionally, MARDI was proving that Trigona honey would have very high nutrient on medicine world.

As much 33 species of Trigona available in Malaysia (Schwarz 1939). Trigona is important for pollination process in Tropical areas, subtropical and certain areas across the world. According to Michener (2007), Trigona is forming into bigger colony and will have complex social organisation compared to Honey bee. Besides, their nest architecture can be somewhere in the land, tree or even in the rock showing that how complex Trigona can be instead of their action.

Conservation process Trigona and initiated of its breeding industries in Agriculture of Malaysia was committed by MARDI. Studies have shown that Trigona would have high potential as pollination agent in Agriculture areas.

CURRENT METHOD OF BREEDING TRIGONA
  • Most of the Agricultural Industries are highly recommend providing 2 different size of boxes depending on Trigona species itself. For producing Trigona Itama honey, box with 21inch length x 15inch width x 9inch height are required. This sizes is suggested after studies about action and the nest structure is implemented.

  • According to Trigona act, honey balls will be created by 3 balls rate per day (based on dates its moving). Creation of these balls will literally stop only if existing areas could not capable to supply the honey balls.

  • Occasionally, in order to determine the function of particular Trigona boxes, it took variety of aspect. Effortlessly management is one of the prior factor in choosing these boxes. A good harvesting technique and cutting colony technique will lead to a better results.

  • The old concept is using wooden box which will rotten in times

  • Mold/Fungus will start to grow when the box is moist

  • Its not hygienic

  • Causes BSF disease

  • Need to change frequently
